Out of Order – May

Out of Order by Ray Cooney was a political farce set in a London hotel and featuring an aptly named politician, Richard Willey, MP, (played by John Shepherd) who juggled a series of women including his wife, around the hotel bedroom.  His problems were added to by an unpredictable window, which kept knocking unconscious various characters, including the private detective sent by his wife to spy on Willey.  Thinking he is dead, Willey and his neurotic private secretary, George Pigden (Michael Cooke) hide the evidence in a cupboard, where the Body spends much of the play hanging on a hook on the back of the door.  It was a welcome return to the Parlour Players stage for John Shepherd, who was originally down to direct the play, but finding that he couldn’t cast the main part, took it on himself, leaving the Director’s role to Theo Spring.  Newcomers Katie Eynon and Simon Kelly joined some of the regulars, also including Naomi Swift, who had made her debut the previous May. The play also saw the return of Gordon Drayson as A. Body, his first appearance since playing the Artful Dodger in Oliver! in 1991!
